In order to show respect, officers of the department and surrounding departments will wear a black ribbon around their badges. It is similar to flying a flag at half-staff. It is one ribbon , that as an officer, you never want to wear. Over 15,000 law enforcement officers have died and left their families as a result of protecting ours. No call is "routine" and no "routine" call is the same. Around every corner is a potential hazard. At any time, an officer may have to take a human life to preserve others. The officers, who have died during their duty, have left spouses, children, relatives, co-workers and friends behind. Families have been destroyed and spouses left to support themselves without any notice.
